The International Mobility Program (IMP) allows Canadian employers to hire foreign workers on a temporary work permit without the need for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). This in turn may provide a number of benefits for both employers and employees, such as the easier and more efficient hiring process.

What is LMIA?

A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document employers in Canada might require for hiring foreign workers.

Contrary to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, under which work permits may be issued depending on labour market conditions, the International Mobility Program contributes to the wider economic and cultural interests of Canada.

Workers eligible for the IMP include:

• Any worker employed under such trade agreements as North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and many others
• Persons entering Canada with an open work permit
• Persons entering Canada as inter- company transferees (employees of foreign companies)

How to Apply through IMP?

There are 3 primary steps as follows:

1.) Get a Job offer:

You will need to submit an offer of employment from your prospective Canadian employer through the IMP Employee Portal.

To employ foreign workers through the International Mobility Program, employers will be required to meet the following requirements:

• To be eligible for an LMIA exemption, the Temporary Foreign Worker must meet certain requirements.
• The employer needs to pay the $230 compliance fee.
• The employer must complete and submit an official job offer form to the IMP Employee Portal if required.

However, if the temporary foreign worker currently is a holder of a valid Canadian open work permit, then the employer will not have to pay for a compliance fee or provide an official written job offer.

2.) Apply for Work Permit:

Once the above requirements are met, then you can apply for a work permit. In this case, you will need a Temporary Foreign Work Permit. You need your offer of employer number to complete your application. If you’re eligible to work in Canada, your application will be approved and you’ll get:-

• A letter of introduction and a work permit from Canada Border Services Officer, or else
• A new work permit ( this applies if you live in Canada or apply when you enter Canada)

After your application is approved and you have been issued a work permit and travel visa, you can prepare to start for a new job in Canada.
